Mid Modern Civil Rights Movement & Art

Image
Civil Rights Movement & Art Work After WW2, the Civil Rights Movement had started making waves. One thing I've always loved about art is the impact and power it can have, through expression on real and or current issues.  I decided to do my assignment on the impact art may have had on the movement during and after. Through research I discovered art wasn't really allowed to be publicly political around this time. Pieces weren't typically published or displayed greatly. It didn't seem to be recognized as such until more afterwards. I put together pieces of art from during/after civil rights movement really began, that powerfully express the turmoil and injustice, of that time period, but that for many still spark emotion. American People #18, Faith Ringgold 1967 oil on canvas Through my research, it consistently pointed that  Ringgold played a large role in impactful art surrounding the civil rights movement, specifically with her series, American People series and B

Early Modern Art & The Influence of World War One

Image
Early Modern Art encompasses a large variety of time, art and art movements. In this assignment I'll be focusing in on styles of art and the huge influence that WW1 had. Looking at the art as it changed over time, from the start of war till the end, parallels most people's feelings about it, as well. Beginning with idealism, some movements were proud of their countries for fighting and standing up; bold, vivid, futurist. Though as many began to see and experience the war, opinions were heavy, worrisome and impactful, and then for some they felt and went beyond that. For some the war led to anger and what would be described as radical anti-government movements.       The war influenced and impacted everyone in all different ways, and these few different pieces of art are just the tip of the iceberg. Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson, La Mitrailleuse , 1915. Created in Britian      He was an painter who was associated with a Futurist group, which is apparent in many of his piece

Romantic Era- Impressionism to Post Impressionism

Image
The 1800s were referred to as the Romantic Era, but there were so many styles of art being produced during this era; it was somewhat overwhelming to focus in and decide what to discuss for this assignment. Some of the art produced during this era is called Romantic, Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Naturalist and Nationalist. There was so much going on in the world from politics to science growing, transportation, and so much more that all added to the large growth of art and new styles. All of these styles were really interesting and eye catching but I choose to compare Impressionism to Post Impressionism.  Impressionism Impressionism created some waves as the group of artists were among the first to not wait for their art to be accepted by the salon, which was a big deal back then. The artist we know today as Impressionists couldn't afford to wait for France, the salon, to accept their work. The artists pooled their money, rented a studio and set a date for their own e

Baroque Era Judith Beheading

Image
Judith Beheading Holofernes painted around 1598-1599, or 1602 by well-known Baroque Artist, Caravaggio. T his image almost immediately captured my attention, when searching for Baroque art for this assignment. The artist, Caravaggio frequently painted Biblical scenes as a response to the Council of Trent ("The Council Of Trent And The Call To Reform Art – Smarthistory") . When this painting was done, it was meant to capture a story from the Book of Judith, though through some research I don't believe this book is associated with the bible now. It isn't for Christians, but may be for some Catholics, the answer wasn't very clear to me.  The story of Judith and background of this image was Judith the widow used her beauty to seduce and stay with the Assyrian general Holofernes and slayed him, to serve her people helping save the Israel from oppression of the Assyrians.  As I said, this image immediately captured my attention; mainly for the emotion portrayed and

Renaissance Blog Primavera

Image
Primavera  Sandro Botticelli created in 1480s Sandro Botticelli is one of the more well-known artists from the Renaissance. He was the first of his time to make large scale mythology pieces, such as the one above.  ("Primavera By Sandro Botticelli") This specific piece was commissioned by the Medici Family whom Sandro was very close with; he was welcomed freely within their home, anytime. (Ann) It is said that this piece was hung in the bedroom of a bride who married into the Medici family. The exact details of this piece are unclear, though it is believed to have been made between 1477 and 1482. The original title of this piece is also a mystery, it was first called La Primavera by another artist, once viewed almost 70 years after it was created.  ("Spring Mysteries: Botticelli's Primavera - Artstor")  Another symbol frequently used or connected to art work commissioned for the Medici family is orange trees. Though here it is also supposed to play a role of s

Loafing in the Lupine Art Analysis

Image
Loafing in the Lupine painted by Marion Rose.  Uploaded to Fine Art America, April 25th, 2010. ( "Loafing In The Lupin By Marion Rose" )  Location and when created is unknown. Based on reading and looking at her other art, I'd speculate this was created after a trip to Alaska or Canada, and completed in 2010, before being uploaded online.   I came across this painting searching for some Alaskan art to analysis. I was immediately drawn to this style with the vibrancy and style, but also because was a black bear in my yard yesterday. The image of the black bear on the hunt stalking through the beautiful trees and grass is very fresh in my mind. Tis the season in Alaska, though; searching for those fresh baby moose that I had just seen in my driveway, 10 minutes prior.  This painting is an acrylic painting on canvas. This piece of art uses lots of color and texture, which is what the artist was known for. I believe with the dramatic contrast with the center of the art and

Introducing Destiny

Image
Introducing Destiny --  I'm Destiny Jackson, and I find it hard to describe myself and my life in a paragraph. To start, I live on the Kenai Peninsula with my husband of 5 years, and 3-year-old daughter. Growing up, I never imagined I'd live in Alaska; but I guess you could say it was my Destiny. I'm a stay-at-home mom to one sweet little girl trying to dive back into college and finish my degree. I was so very close before I got pregnant; with so much time and money invested I've made it my goal within the next year to finish it, even if I don't use my degree right now. Though I am a stay-at-home mom, I've found a variety of things to keep me busy working, beyond the typical 8-5 jobs. I currently manage a small coffee shop, The Compass Coffeehouse. I also run my own small business,  Radiant Wear . That started out as making and selling headbands; but has been slowly growing into also sewing and selling Childrens clothes and accessories. I've never described
